Western USA — Landscapes Shaped by Time

Red rock canyons, monumental arches and the geothermal wonders of Yellowstone

Across the American West, millions of years of geological history have created landscapes of extraordinary scale, colour and character.

From the sculpted sandstone of Utah and the immense depths of the Grand Canyon to the iconic formations of Monument Valley, each location reveals a different expression of nature's power.

In Yellowstone, steaming geysers, mineral terraces and brilliantly coloured thermal pools add another dimension to this photographic journey through the Western United States.

The story behind the photographs

Stone, light and the forces that shape the Earth

Travelling through the national parks of the American West, I was struck by the extraordinary variety of landscapes created by erosion and geological time. In Arches, Bryce Canyon and Canyonlands, the shapes of the rocks change constantly with the angle of the sun. Natural arches, towering hoodoos and deep canyons offered an endless succession of compositions, where shadows often revealed as much as the light itself.

The Grand Canyon brought an entirely different sense of scale. Its immense depth and layered formations made every viewpoint feel unique, particularly when the changing light emphasised the relief of the canyon walls. Monument Valley and the winding San Juan River offered further examples of how distinctive forms can define an entire landscape.

Yellowstone revealed another side of the American West. Here, the landscape is shaped not only by erosion but also by geothermal activity. Geyser eruptions, rising steam, mineral deposits and vividly coloured pools created an almost abstract photographic world, where natural patterns and unexpected colours became the central subjects.
