New York — The City in Light and Motion
Iconic architecture, urban perspectives and the changing light of New York City
New York reveals its character through a fascinating combination of architecture, movement and constantly changing light.
From Manhattan's iconic skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge to the waterfront views of Jersey City, this album explores the city's distinctive forms and perspectives.
As daylight fades, reflections on the Hudson River and illuminated buildings transform the urban landscape into a world of colour, contrast and atmosphere.
The story behind the photographs
Urban geometry, reflections and the magic of city lights
Photographing New York is an exercise in observing lines, shapes and movement. The city's architecture offers an extraordinary variety of compositions, from the distinctive silhouette of the Flatiron Building to the towering presence of One World Trade Center. At street level, yellow taxis, urban art and unexpected details reveal another side of Manhattan's visual identity.
I was particularly drawn to the changing perspectives along the waterfront. The Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan skyline and the views towards Jersey City offered opportunities to explore the relationship between architecture, water and light. Each viewpoint revealed a different balance between the city's monumental structures and the open space of the rivers.
As evening approached, New York took on an entirely different atmosphere. The warm colours of sunset gradually gave way to illuminated skyscrapers, reflections and the graphic patterns of bridges against the night sky. These transitions were among my favourite photographic moments, when familiar landmarks became almost abstract compositions of light and geometry.
