South Africa — From Cape Town to Madikwe's Wild Heart

Coastal landscapes, African penguins and unforgettable wildlife encounters in Madikwe Game Reserve

ÎleSouth Africa reveals striking contrasts, from Cape Town's dramatic coastline and mountain scenery to the wildlife-rich landscapes of Madikwe Game Reserve.

Along the Cape Peninsula, African penguins, ostriches and baboons share the scenery with sweeping ocean views and rugged coastal roads.

Further inland, encounters with elephants, giraffes, lions and other wild animals offered extraordinary photographic moments in the changing light of the African bush.

The story behind the photographs

From coastal light to the untamed African bush

My photographic journey through South Africa began around Cape Town, where the ocean, mountains and wildlife create an extraordinary variety of scenes. From the harbour and the coastal roads to Boulders Beach and Table Mountain, I was drawn to the contrasts between expansive landscapes and unexpected encounters with animals.

Madikwe Game Reserve offered an entirely different photographic experience. Moving through the bush with our guide, I discovered the remarkable diversity of its wildlife. Giraffes, antelopes, elephants, rhinos, lions and zebras appeared in surroundings where light, vegetation and animal behaviour constantly changed the composition.

Some moments were particularly memorable: an elephant approaching along a track, a lion resting in the shade or a hyena illuminated by the warm light of the day. Wildlife photography requires patience and attention, but it is often the unexpected encounter that leaves the strongest impression.
