Oléron Island — Where the Atlantic Shapes the Light

A photographic journey through fishing harbours, oyster villages and the changing landscapes of France's Atlantic coast

What draws me to Oléron Island is the constant presence of the Atlantic. The light changes quickly, the sea reshapes the shoreline, and even familiar places reveal a different atmosphere with each passing hour.

This album brings together photographs of La Cotinière's fishing harbour, the Chassiron Lighthouse, sandy beaches and the oyster-growing landscapes around Dolus. From colourful boats and weathered coastal structures to small details of marine life, each image reflects a different aspect of the island.

Beyond its coastal scenery, I was particularly interested in the relationship between nature and everyday life: the working harbours, the quiet oyster trails, the movement of the wind and the fleeting moments when light transforms an ordinary scene.

The story behind the photographs

Harbours, oyster trails and Atlantic light

La Cotinière is one of Oléron's best-known fishing harbours, where boats, maritime activity and changing weather create constantly evolving photographic scenes.

At the northern tip of the island, Chassiron Lighthouse overlooks a coastline shaped by tides and wind. Further south, the oyster-growing areas around Dolus reveal another side of Oléron, with their channels, working landscapes and distinctive coastal atmosphere.

Together, these places reflect what interests me in coastal photography: the meeting of natural forces, human activity and light.
